Bikini season and dairy allergies be damned: There are few things that scream summer more than cooling off with a delicious scoop of ice cream. And Aquidneck Island has more than its fair share of the delicious options. From decadent to old-timey, here are five of our favorite spots to get a cone, cup, or sundae – and we take our ice cream consumption seriously.

1. Kilwin’s

Located next to Ryan Amusements, Kilwin’s offers dozens of flavors of rich, creamy ice cream (pictured at top) to suit any palette. (Parents, beware: It’s nearly impossible to go to one without stopping at the other.) We recommend something with chocolate, as the sweet shop specializes in handmade chocolates and fudge in addition to ice cream.

2. Ben & Jerry’s

A perennial favorite, Ben & Jerry’s  has two locations in Newport, on Bannister’s Wharf and lower Thames Street. Whether you have a hankering for a tried-and-true flavors like Cherry Garcia or a newer addition like The Tonight Dough, you can be certain that you’ll get a marvelous scoop made with fair-trade and non-GMO ingredients and a good dose of fun.

3. Frosty Freeze

Frosty Freeze is an old-fashioned window-service ice cream shop – and local tradition – that has delivered soft-serve (try the “flavor bursts”), hard-pack, milkshakes, and more for nearly 60 years. Feel free to bring Fido along, too, for a special doggie ice cream topped with a biscuit. Don’t be surprised if you have to wait in line for your treat, and be sure to bring cash or you’ll be out of luck.

4. The Newport Creamery

The Newport Creamery is a Rhode Island institution with diner-style food and an ice cream parlor vibe. Visit one of two shops on the island (Bellevue Avenue and West Main Road), where you can dine-in or take-out your favorite ice cream concoction or take home a gallon tub of your favorite flavor. From banana splits and clown sundaes to Super Chipper sandwiches and Awful Awful shakes – a local favorite that combines ice milk, milk, and a syrupy flavor shot – there’s a treat for every appetite here.

5. Sweet Berry Farm

There is ice cream, and then there is homemade ice cream. Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown is the home base of Susanna’s Ice Cream, an award-winner that uses the farm’s fresh berries and other local ingredients in its frozen masterpieces. We highly recommend ordering one of Susanna’s flavors, though the rich, creamy flavor of Sweet Berry’s soft serve is also pretty hard to beat… Then again, we’re also fools for Bliss’s hard-packed varieties, made just over the border in Attleboro, Mass. Go with your gut – no matter which route you take, you won’t go wrong.
