What to Wear: Preppy-chic for Polo

What to Wear--Newport International Polo Series

Summer in Newport isn’t complete without at least one Saturday spent at the polo fields, where there’s always a showcase of fabulous style.

The social calendar never seems to wane on a Saturday in Newport, but no matter what else going on, no summer is complete without a jaunt to Portsmouth’s Glen Farm to take in a match between Newport’s own polo team and their challengers in the Newport International Polo Series. This weekend, Newport takes on Monaco in the first match of the season, and whether you’re lucky enough to have scored a tailgating spot (spaces tend to sell out in April), are taking in the match from the Alex & Ani Pavilion (advance reservations recommended), or pulling up a chair on the lawn, it’s always fun to dress the part.

The core of any great polo outfit is the perfect frock. The Corbin seersucker dress by Lauren James (1), available at Monelle, is the perfect balance of fun, flirty, and feminine in a classic fabric designed to keep you cool on a hot summer day.

It’s always nice to add a little equestrian-chic to your ensemble when heading to the pony fields, and these simple horse bit earrings (2) from Sequin do just that. The coordinating bracelet is appropriately understated, so you can add it to your arm party without looking too matchy-matchy.

With your dress as the backbone of your #ootd, let a bold hat be the shining star of your look; practically speaking, you’ll want something to protect yourself from hours in the sun, too. Onigo’s color-block straw hat (3) in fuchsia and orange, available at Angela Moore, adds the perfect pop of color. Plus, we love the wide brim that can be manipulated up or down depending on your mood.

Grass always poses a challenge for lovers of high-heels, so opt for a wedge like Talbots’s Lindsay metallic espadrille slide (4), which will give you plenty of height and allow you to stomp divots without sinking into into the field.

To complete your look, try J. McLaughlin’s bamboo clutch (5). It’s just the right size to hold a phone, keys, and cash, and it’s eternal summer style will make it a wardrobe staple for the entire season.
